All About ASR: What It Is, What It Isn’t, and Why It Matters
May 26, 2026 @ 4:00PM Pacific | 7:00PM Eastern
90-Minutes | NCRA, AAERT & NVRA credit is pending for this webinar
Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) technology plays an increasing role in the record-creation process, enhancing both accuracy and efficiency across all methods of capture. At the same time, many attorneys and clients are beginning to incorporate ASR-based tools into their own workflows. This session takes an educational look at how ASR functions, what it can and cannot do, and how it supports, rather than replaces, the vital human skill required to produce a complete and trustworthy record.
Participants will examine common misconceptions about ASR, including the belief that certain capture methods are “just recording,” when in fact most modern software integrates ASR technology in some capacity. We’ll highlight the strengths and limitations of ASR, explore ethical and professional considerations surrounding its use, and show how successful reporters across all methods embrace evolving technology. Above all, the discussion will reaffirm the continuing importance of the trained professional—the human in the room—whose judgment, accuracy, and integrity remain essential to preserving the record.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Define Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) and describe its practical capabilities and limitations within the context of legal proceedings.
- Explain how human judgment, skill, and oversight continue to play a central role in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the record, even as new tools emerge.
- Identify common misconceptions surrounding ASR and apply clarifying, fact-based information when discussing it professionally.
- Recognize ethical and procedural considerations associated with the use of technology in reporting workflows.
- Evaluate emerging technologies with a focus on professional responsibility, accuracy standards, and long-term implications for the field.
