Merilee’s Tips & Tricks for Reporters: Shutting Down

By Merilee S. Johnson, RDR, CRR, CRC, RSA

We’re always looking for a faster way to do things, whether it’s teaching ourselves to write shorter, mastering how to write faster, or uncovering shortcuts in our software to become more efficient.

We work hard to hammer out hundreds of pages.  When we’re done, we want to shut down quickly and enjoy life beyond our computers.

Quickly & Easily Turn off Your Computer.

To quickly and easily turn off your computer, create a Shut Down icon on your desktop by following these quick steps:

  • Right-Click anywhere on your desktop
  • Put your cursor over “New”
  • In the context menu, select “Shortcut”
  • A “Create Shortcut” dialogue box will open
  • Type in: %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0
  • Click “Next”
  • Type in a name for this shortcut: “Shut Down”
  • Click “Next”

Add a Picture.

You should now have a “Shut Down” icon on your desktop.  To add a picture:

  • Right-Click on the “Shut Down” icon
  • Click on “Properties”
  • Click on the “Shortcut” tab
  • Towards the bottom, click on “Change Icon”
  • Select a picture from the icon menu options
  • Click “Okay”
Thank you for reading the Veritext Reporter!   We hope you enjoyed this year’s first installment of Tips & Tricks.
